Music and Ambient Records

In the evenings, when the generators rest and the lanterns come out, Bamboo Cottages runs on its own soundtrack: the water on the sand, the wind moving through the casuarina trees, and sometimes a record playing softly from the open kitchen.

Over the years we have collected a small shelf of ambient records and quiet playlists. Nothing with words that demand attention. Slow piano from Hanoi jazz studios, field recordings of monsoon rain, traditional melodies played on the dan bau. Guests often ask what is playing, and the answer changes with the cook on duty and the mood of the sea.

There is a principle behind it. A retreat should lower the volume of your life, not replace it with another noise. So the music stays at the edge of hearing, something you notice only when you stop trying to notice anything at all. Many guests tell us they slept better here than they have in years, and we suspect the silence with a whisper of melody is part of the reason.

If you have a record that means home to you, bring it. On calm nights we pass the headphones around and share. The beach has heard everything from Bach to Bon Iver, and it never complained once.
