Meditation
Every morning before the yoga class, a small group gathers at the far end of the beach to sit. The meditation at Bamboo Cottages is simple and unschooled: we sit on the sand facing the water, follow the breath, and let the horizon do its ancient trick of making thoughts smaller.
Sessions are guided on most days by one of our teachers, in plain language, with no tradition demanding allegiance. Beginners learn to sit comfortably and count breaths. Experienced sitters get silence and a bell. Both get the same soundtrack: waves in, waves out, a heron arguing with the tide.
Evening sits are shorter and often happen by candlelight after dinner. On full moon nights we sit later, and the sea turns silver, and nobody checks the time because watches are discouraged anyway.
People arrive believing they cannot meditate. The beach disagrees. It turns out that meditation is easy when the distractions are beautiful and the chair is warm sand. Ten minutes here can be worth an hour in a busy studio, and the habit travels home in your bones, not your luggage.
