Mindfulness
Mindfulness at Bamboo Cottages is practiced with the senses before it is practiced with ideas. The island supplies the exercises without being asked: the exact temperature of the first step into the sea, the sound of a coconut falling somewhere in the palms, the taste of mango picked an hour ago.
Through the week we weave small mindful rituals into ordinary moments. Morning tea is drunk without talking, just to see what drinking tea actually feels like. One meal a day is eaten in silence, slowly, and guests are routinely shocked by how much flavor they had been missing. A walk to the far rocks becomes a meditation on footprints, hersmit crabs and breathing.
Our teachers borrow from several traditions but keep the language plain. The point is not to achieve a special state. The point is to be where your feet are, which on this island is soft sand, and to notice that this, today, is a life.
Guests who arrive with anxious minds often leave with a pocketful of tiny practices they actually use: three breaths before opening a laptop, one mindful cup of coffee at dawn, a minute of sky before sleep. Small things, practiced on a beach, that somehow hold.
